The battery energy storage system (BESS) market in Ukraine is still in its early stage, but has significant potential for development. Modern battery energy storage system facilities operating as part of the Integrated Power System (IPS) of Ukraine include electricity storage, power conversion equipment, and engineering structures. The development of BESS in Ukraine is important for stabilizing the power system, integrating renewable energy sources and ensuring the country’s energy security.
Current state of the BESS market in Ukraine:
- Small number of implemented systems:
At the moment, the number of installed BESSs in Ukraine is limited. These are mostly pilot projects and systems used for technology testing and data collection.
- Dependence on imported technologies:
Many BESS components, especially advanced energy storage technologies, are imported from abroad. This creates risks for energy security and affects the cost of projects.
- Need for government support:
For the rapid development of the BESS market, clear government support programs, investment incentives, and the development of a regulatory framework are needed.
Prospects for the development of the Ukrainian market of BESS:
- Integration of RES:
BESSs will play a key role in stabilizing the grid as the share of renewable energy sources (RES) such as solar and wind power plants increases.
- Increase energy efficiency:
BESS will allow for more efficient use of electricity by storing it during periods of low demand and releasing it during peak load periods.
- Strengthening energy independence:
The development of domestic production of energy storage facilities will help reduce dependence on imported energy and equipment.
- Creation of new jobs:
The development of the energy storage industry will create new jobs in the production, installation, maintenance and management of energy storage systems.
- Modernization of the energy system:
Implementation of BESS will allow modernizing Ukraine’s energy system, increasing its reliability and flexibility.
Measures to develop the market of battery storage systems in Ukraine:
- State support:
Programs to support investments in the construction and operation of BESS should be developed and implemented, including financial incentives, preferential lending and tax benefits.
- Establishment of a regulatory framework:
Legislation should be developed and adopted to regulate the operation of BESSs, define their technical requirements and standards, and establish grid connection rules.
- Development of domestic production:
It is necessary to stimulate the development of domestic production of BESS components, which will reduce dependence on imports and create new jobs.
- Raising awareness:
An information campaign on the benefits and opportunities of using BESS should be conducted for a wide range of consumers and investors. The development of the BESS market in Ukraine is an important task to ensure the sustainable development of the energy system, increase energy efficiency and strengthen the country’s energy independence.
